OPA Awards & Racers Meeting

February 26, 2013

Coming off a very successful 2012 season, the OPA Teams recently converged on the tiny towns of Galloway & Leeds Point in New Jersey to hold their Annual Meeting and Awards Party. With excitement, OPA announced the addition of 3 new race sites Lake Hopatcong, NJ; Atlantic City, NJ; and to be announced very shorty is the site in Long Island, New York. OPA is proud to be returning to the race sites in East Tawas, MI; St Clair, MI; Port Huron, MI/Sarnia, Ont, Can and Solomons, MD. Ed Smith, President of OPA followed by reiterating safety requirements for all boats, discussion about GPSs for the bracketed classes and the possibility of an "Entry Level" class being introduced to OPA for the 2013 season (single outboard boats, more information about the possibility of this class will be released when more is known). Additionally, OPA will continue to red flag races whenever there is an incident on the course. Once the course is clear, the race will be restarted.

The awards party was more like a family reunion for wayward racers. The house was packed with the band "The Switch" featuring Johnny Saris of Saris Racing along with special appearances by Jason Saris of Saris Racing & Louie Giancontieri of Strictly Business & Typhoon. Teams came from California, Florida, Michigan, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and of course, New Jersey. It was a great night with a warm bond of close friends and family.

2013 Lake Havasu Gran Prix cancelled

March 5, 2013

As you may already be aware of the POPRA Board of Directors were forced to cancel the upcoming Lake Havasu Gran Prix in conjunction with the 2013 Lake Havasu Desert Storm Event due to lack of interest from the racing membership.

Several important issues have arisen from that decision that needs to be addressed with the general membership which is why I have called for a general membership meeting to discuss the current state of POPRA and the future of POPRA and Offshore Powerboat Racing on the West Coast. I would ask that you attend this very important meeting as we have come to a crossroads as an organization and we need to discuss (as a group) where to go from here.

This meeting was held on Saturday, March 23, from Noon to 3:00 p.m. at Dick Simon Yacht Sales, 34571 Golden Lantern, Dana Point, CA 92629

Powerboat racing coming to Atlantic City on June 23

March 19, 2013

Atlantic City will experience the sights and sounds of 40- to-50-foot powerboats going 150 mph or faster in the ocean on June 23.

The Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix will be held on a six-mile course not far off the beach. The start-finish line will be at Missouri Avenue, and the Frank S. Farley State Marina at Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino will be the race headquarters.

"It'll be exciting to watch, and it's free," race chairman Dave Patnaude, 43, of Toms River, said Sunday. "We changed up the course to make it spectator-friendly. It won't go far out into the ocean."

Patnaude and Tom Pohlman, the vice president and general manager of Golden Nugget, talked about holding the event. They received the endorsement of the Atlantic City Alliance, a marketing coalition that promotes tourism in the city.

Powerboats have Atlantic City's cooperation and hoping for Mother Nature's

April 13, 2013

ATLANTIC CITY - Powerboat racing's version of NASCAR is coming to town in late June.

With the help of the Atlantic City Alliance, a marketing coalition that promotes tourism in the city, Golden Nugget Atlantic City and the cooperation of several other casino properties and other local businesses, the New Jersey Offshore Powerboat Racing Association will hold the Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix on June 21-23.

Race day will be June 23 with 40- to-50-foot powerboats going 150 mph or faster.

"We're very happy to be back in Atlantic City," NJOPRA president Toni Potthoff said Friday during a news conference at the Chart House restaurant in Golden Nugget. "We didn't have such good luck the last time we were here because Mother Nature closed us down. But we're very happy to be back again."

POWER BOAT RACES COMING TO LAKE HOPATCONG

April 11, 2013

JEFFERSON – The powerboats will be cruising along Lake Hopatcong, jockeying to line up as the starter in the pace boat waits for the right moment to set them loose. The water slaps at the sides of the sleek craft as their several wakes roll and collide, the eyes of each driver on the starter.

The moment arrives and the signal is given.

With a roar of their powerful outboard motors, the boats seem to leap from the water, their bows rising above the wave crests, cutting through water easily, then settling on the lake surface like dancers before racing off and leaving behind a rainbow plume.

That is the sensation Jay Muller said viewers will see from the Lake Forest Yacht Club from May 10 to 12, when the club hosts the first-ever Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix.

Powerboat racing coming to Lake Hopatcong

April 15, 2013

Boat speeds on Lake Hopatcong are limited after Memorial Day, so it’s a good thing the inaugural Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix, May 10-12, will beat the holiday deadline.

With twin-engine racers hitting straightaways at 135 mph and cornering at 95 mph, the competitors in the Offshore Powerboat Association’s first race event of the year are used to exceeding limits.

“It’s all about adrenalin,” said Jay Muller, a Lake Hopatcong resident and the OPA’s top-ranked racer, who was instrumental in bringing the race circuit back to New Jersey’s largest lake.

Muller and up to 40 other racers will compete in six categories for a purse of about $25,000 on an “arena-style” 2.8-mile course that will be fully viewable from many locations on the lakeshore. The Brick-based OPA is using the Lake Forest Yacht Club as a staging area.

Mothers Treated to OPA’s Season Opener

May 15, 2013

The Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) enjoyed the start of their scheduled eight race season in picturesque Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey for the first annual Lake Hopatcong Grand Prix presented by Broadco Restoration. After achieving numerous championships as a throttle man, Jay Muller became Race Promoter Extraordinaire and invited the offshore boat racing world to his back yard. With most race courses being four to five miles in lap length, Jay wanted to put a twist and shortened the course to 2.3 miles which is similar to the size of the courses that the 200mph Unlimited Hydroplanes compete on. This proved to be brilliant as the racers had no margin of error as yes the amount of laps almost tripled and more importantly from the spectator prospective, it was non-stop action, while being able to see the whole course from your seat. Everyone assumes that a race on a lake will be calm and for the better part it is, however add a 2.3 short course and ten boats per race, what you have is what is a called in the offshore boat racing world a “washing machine”. On most ocean courses racers can establish a rhythm and even though the ocean is still not for the faint of heart, a “washing machine” effect creates total water confusion which prevents any form for rhythm which adds to the diversity and challenge of the OPA sites on the schedule.

The Heritage Coast Celebrates Father's Day

June 19, 2013

The Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) converged on Tawas Bay in Michigan for the Second Annual Heritage Coast Grand Prix. The cities of Tawas City and East Tawas rolled out the carpet for the second stop on the OPA Racing Series. With stop one taking place on Mother's Day, it was only appropriate to celebrate Father's Day on the majestic shoreline of Northern Michigan. With the obvious theme being about fathers, a total of seven teams were father and son pairings (Cleveland Construction, Pirate Racing, Velocity Racing, Pushin Tin, Country Service, Miss PTM & Lilly Sport Boats) with Class 6 showcasing a father competing against his two sons (Hurricane Force vs Wazzup II). The threat of rain was around all weekend but with the exception of a short shower during the drivers meeting it was smooth sailing for the race to go off without a hitch.
